It is a card game played with two full decks of regular cards including the jokers. I like to call it Grown-Up Go Fish. The goal is to collect points by grouping like cards together (melding) and creating completed canastas (a canasta is 7 of a kind (7 Kings, 7 fours, etc.)) The Canasta version that is most popular now is 4-person partnership Canasta. Are there other versions? Of course, you can play two, or three person Canasta or you can play an extended form of Canasta called Hand and Foot that allows for more than four players.
